TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Ahead of of Dec. 7, 2022, the 81th year since the 1941 Pearl Harbor attacks, Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered U.S. and Florida flags to fly at half-staff.

“On December 7, 1941, over two thousand American soldiers and civilians lost their lives and over one thousand were injured in the Japanese attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor,” a memo from the governor’s office said.

“I signed the attached Proclamation and hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.” View the proclamation here.

President Joe Biden issued a national proclamation Tuesday for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, honoring the 2,403 service members and civilians who tragically lost their lives to the Japanese attack.

“We reflect on the resilience of America’s Armed Forces, who withstood the attack and built the most capable fighting force the world has ever known.  In the wake of tragedy, these brave women and men — the Greatest Generation — answered the call to defend freedom, justice, and democracy across the Pacific, throughout Europe, and around the globe,” the president’s statement said.

Pearl Harbor is historically known for being a rallying cry for the U.S. to enter World War II. On Dec. 8, the day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress for a declaration of war on Japan.
