Florida Republicans break unprecedented 900,000 voter lead over Democrats after Biden’s visit

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In the same week that President Joe Biden campaigned in Tampa and opened his first Florida field office in Hillsborough County, the Republican Party of Florida reached an unprecedented milestone further enshrining the state’s perception of being “red.”

As of April 26, registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by 900,497, according to data compiled by Florida’s Voice. The shift happened in the days following Biden’s Tuesday visit.

Madison County, which is close to flipping red, is now only leaning Democratic by 48 voters, or 0.41%.

In Hillsborough County, the GOP is just over 10,000 voters away from flipping it red, or a margin of 1.32%.

Gov. Ron DeSantis reacted to Biden’s visit before he arrived this week.

“All I can tell you is Floridians are not buying what Joe Biden is selling and in November we will send him back to Delaware, where he belongs,” DeSantis said.

It was only in January that the GOP’s statewide lead broke 800,000 voters.

The lead broke 700,000 at the end of 2023, and broke 600,000 a few months earlier.

Democrats have traditionally outnumbered Republicans in Florida going back several decades.

Still, with Democrats leading by nearly 100,000 voters during the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump increased his win margin from 2016 to over 3%.

The ramifications of the Democrats’ newfound enthusiasm deficit in Florida have yet to be seen in a presidential election, but the 2022 midterms – where the GOP swept by around 20% statewide – could be a sign.

Polls so far have suggested Trump can defeat Biden in Florida by double digits. The RealClearPolling aggregate has Trump up over Biden by 9%.
