JACKSONVILLE (FLV) – Governor Ron DeSantis announced Monday he will call a special session to address the problems with the property insurance market in Florida.

“Trying to bring some sanity and stabilize and have a functioning market,” DeSantis said. “I’m confident that we’re going to be able to get that done.”

The Governor said the special session will take place in May. He said he will sign a proclamation this week to set those specific dates.

“And it will have as the main focus the reform of the property insurance market,” DeSantis said. “We may also address other issues that came close to getting across the finish line.”

Last week, State Senator Jeff Brandes urged a special session when lawmakers did not address the issue during the 2022 regular session.

“Florida’s private property insurance market has collapsed, and it is evident we must call a special session to address this dire situation,” Brandes said in the letter to Senate President Wilton Simpson and House Speaker Chris Sprowls on March 6th.

Brandes said more than 800,000 homeowners cannot find insurance aside from Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.

Thirty seven members of the legislature also filed written certifications with the Department of State in April, therefore, kickstarting the process to possibly convene a special session without the Governor’s approval.

Florida lawmakers will convene this week for a special session to address redistricting. DeSantis vetoed a map the Republican legislature passed that he said contained a racially gerrymandered district. The Governor proposed another map he wants lawmakers to approve this week.
