WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., responded to several attacks by Republicans who said that the Senate’s new dress code policy was effectively “lowering the bar.”

Fetterman is often seen wearing a hoodie and sports shorts throughout the Capitol, rather than the traditional suit and tie that male senators were expected to fashion in the chamber.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., removed the dress code requirements, which served to ultimately accommodate Fetterman’s attire.

“Aren’t there more important things we should be talking about, rather than if I dress like a slob?” he asked during an MSNBC interview.

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., was one of the Republicans who attacked the senator over social media.

“The Senate no longer enforcing a dress code for Senators to appease Fetterman is disgraceful,” she said. “Dress code is one of society’s standards that set etiquette and respect for our institutions.”

“I’m not really sure why she cares how I dress,” Fetterman responded. “But she really takes it a different way.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis commented on the dress code change and the Pennsylvania senator’s outfit choices.

“To show up in the United States Senate with that, and not have the decency to put on proper attire, I think it’s disrespectful to the body,” he said.

He said that it speaks “very poorly” of the senate to accommodate for the outfits worn by the senator.

“We need to be lifting up our standards in this country, not dumbing down our standards in this country,” he added.

“I dress like he campaigns,” Fetterman said in response to DeSantis’ comments.
