NAPLES (FLV) – Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez responded to Charlie Crist’s running mate Karla Hernandez-Mats’ comments at the Patriot Talk Show in Naples on Tuesday about how Nuñez’s “Latina card should be revoked.”

“I’ll tell you this – I know technically she’s considered a Latina but I think that her Latina card should be revoked,” Hernandez-Mats said.

Hernandez-Mats made those comments in a video from Politico last week

“For her to sit there and say that my Latina card needs to be taken away when my parents came to this country in 1961, fleeing communist Cuba, looking for opportunity in search of the American dream. Not she, nor any one of those hypocrites on the left can take away my heritage or tell me what I feel and for me, well obviously, I am Hispanic by heritage. I am American by the grace of God,” Nuñez said.

Nuñez was elected as Florida’s First Hispanic Female Lieutenant Governor of Florida in 2018. Hernandez-Mats is the president of United Teachers of Dade, which is a teachers union in Miami.

“She is a communist,” said Nuñez, “She is a Fidel Castro sympathizer, she is someone that referred to parents as ‘crazies’ because they had the audacity to show up at their children’s school board meeting.”

Nuñez is referring to a controversial statement from Hernandez-Mats in 2016 after the death of brutalist dictator Fidel Castro. The Democrat’s tweet said that “many in Cuba mourn” his passing. She has since deleted the tweet and said she celebrated Castro’s death.

Hernandez-Mats also put out a tweet with a picture depicting residents and parents as violent and armed movie characters.

“For any of you following the school board meetings, you know that the craziness is real,” Hernandez-Mats said in the tweet. “God be with us.”

“You know, I think that Charlie, if he was looking for a certain demographic should’ve kept looking because honestly she’s an embarrassment to candidates everywhere, she’s an embarrassment to school board unions. I think there’s probably no one worse in the state or dare I say the country maybe Randi Weingarten that could represent everything that Floridians don’t want,” Nuñez said.
