WASHINGTON, D.C. – Parental rights organization Moms for Liberty responded to Florida Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost’s effort help school districts fight against challenges to educational and library materials.

Frost said the bill, called the “Fight Book Bans Act,” would give school districts federal funding to oppose challenges to its curriculum.

“Together, we’re taking a stand against censorship to protect the history and truth of our Black, brown, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities,” Frost said.

Moms for Liberty Cofounder Tiffany Justice said the group does not support book bans, but instead wants parents to have the ability to question books in their child’s K-12 public schools.

“It is nice that the Congressman does not want to ban books,” Justice said. “We don’t either.”

“These schools are taxpayer funded and should not be above transparency or parental input,” she said.

Florida lawmakers have given parents more authority to challenge books that are in schools. Democrats commonly dub the policies as “book bans” while others argue some books are not appropriate for certain students within taxpayer libraries, and can be purchased on their own.

Florida’s Voice has reported on a variety of school books found in schools that included sexually explicit excerpts. Parents have showed up in droves to read the questionable excerpts out loud.

According to Frost, the U.S. Department of Education could provide grants to schools that are paying to “fight off a bad book ban,” including legal representation.
