FORT MYERS (FLV) – Democrat gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist celebrated garnering the endorsement of former President Barack Obama just a couple weeks away from the 2022 election.

“Hey Florida, we have a lot of work to do. And it starts with making Charlie Crist your next governor,” the former president said. “Charlie has two things I admire: guts and decency. Charlie Crist is fearless – guided by what’s right, even when it’s hard.”

“So if you’re ready for a governor who cares about people instead of bullying them, who will fight for voting rights and a woman’s right to choose, who understands the challenges you’re facing every day and who will fight for you – vote for Charlie Crist,” Obama continued.

“Thank you, [Barack Obama],” Crist responded.

Crist was the governor of Florida from 2007-2011 as a Republican, overlapping the same period Obama – a Democrat – was president. In 2010, he became an Independent, and became a Democrat in 2012.

Other endorsements Crist has received include the Florida AFL-CIO, Color of Change PAC, American Federation of Government Employees, Equality Florida, Florida Planned Parenthood PAC, and more.

The state of the race is looking bleak for Crist, new polls show. The most recent October poll from Florida Atlantic University gives DeSantis an 11 point lead over Crist.

According to the university’s poll, DeSantis leads the Democrat 50.9%-39.7%. 4% said they’d vote for someone else while 5.3% said they are undecided.

DeSantis’ approval ratings paint a stronger picture:

  • 53% approval, 39% disapproval
  • 89% Republican approval, 20% Democrat approval
  • 63% Hurricane response approval
  • 40% Democrat Hurricane response approval, 32% disapproval

The poll was conducted from Oct. 12-16 among 719 likely voters with a margin of error of 3.65%. FAU said the data was weighted based on 2020 turnout modeling.

Other recent polls resulted in similar findings.

The last poll aggregated by RealClearPolitics before FAU – Mason-Dixon – also gave DeSantis an 11 point lead, conducted from Sep. 26-28.

Since September every aggregated poll has shown DeSantis gaining steam into the double-digit win margin. He continues to outpace Crist in fundraising.
