WAYNESBORO, Ga. (FLV) – Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., celebrated the opening of a newly built nuclear reactor in the U.S. for the first time in around three decades.

The Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is now host to Unit 3, the “largest generator of clean energy in the nation,” Georgia Power announced.

“For the first time in 30+yrs, a nuclear reactor has been built in America to provide electricity to our grid,” Donalds reacted. “This is exactly what my 20-bill nuclear package aims to facilitate across our nation. Looking forward to further breakthroughs with this innovative tech.”

According to Georgia Power, construction on Unit 3 began on June 22, 2009.

Unit 4 at the plant remains under construction.

Donalds, a strong proponent of nuclear energy, earlier this year introduced provisions for the Donalds Nuclear Energy Package.

“Nuclear is a much-underutilized asset in the arsenal of American energy. If we are to take the clean energy future of the United States seriously, we must consider a whole-of-government approach to implementing nuclear energy into our grid,” Donalds said in May.

“My now fifteen-bill and growing, nuclear energy legislative package promotes the cleanest and greenest source of energy at our country’s disposal,” he added.

Donalds’ host of bills aim to promote development of nuclear power in the U.S.

They “seek to support critical nuclear energy infrastructure projects and institute a focal point within our government for advanced reactor deployment,” his office said.

“Rather than relying on the false fantasies of Democratic politicians who promote inefficient and environmentally detrimental alternative energy sources like wind and solar, it is imperative that nuclear energy is brought to the forefront of our national conversation.”
