FORT MYERS (FLV) – Democrat candidate for governor Charlie Crist launched an ad attacking Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis for supporting Florida’s 15-week abortion ban.

The ad shows video of DeSantis after he signed the state’s 15-week abortion ban into law in April.

“DeSantis signing away your right to choose,” Crist said in the ad. “He’s happy there’s no exceptions for rape or incest.”

Look at that grin. Ron DeSantis signing away your right to choose. He’s happy there’s no exceptions for rape or incest. Happy because DeSantis thinks politicians like him should control women’s bodies. As governor, I’ll protect your choice and that is the difference.

The signed legislation states that abortions are banned after 15 weeks unless two physicians certify in writing that, in reasonable medical judgement, the termination of the pregnancy is necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life or stop her from facing irreversible physical impairment other than a psychological condition.

“This is a time where these babies have beating hearts. They can move. They can taste,” DeSantis said in April. “We are here today to protect life. We are here today to defend those who can’t defend themselves.”

Other exceptions are allowed if two physicians certify in writing that in reasonable medical judgment the fetus has not achieved viability. There are no exceptions for rape and incest.

If elected in November, Crist has vowed to sign an executive order that he said will protect a women’s right to choose.

“With Roe v. Wade gone, everyone here knows that we’re in the fight of our lives to protect a women’s right to choose – but today we’re here to fight,” Crist said.

Even though the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Florida’s abortion law is being challenged in state court.
