TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Five Florida universities ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in the National Academy of Inventors‘ yearly report.

The State University System of Florida celebrated the ranking, touting the placement for the seventh straight year.

The five State University System members ranked include the University of Florida, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida International University and Florida State University.

Notably, all of Florida’s universities in the list except Florida International exceeded their placement from 2022.

University of Florida ranked 13th, better than 2022’s 17th.

University of South Florida placed 34th, better than 36th from 2022.

University of Central Florida beat its 53rd place at 52nd, and Florida State University moved up to 90th place from the prior 99th.

Florida International University remained at 57th.

“The Top 100 Worldwide list highlights the essential role universities across the globe play in creating patented technologies that beneficially impact society,” said Dr. Paul Sanberg, president of the National Academy of Inventors. “At the Academy, it is important for us to recognize and celebrate research and commercialization happening at the university level, as well as spread awareness on how intellectual property can benefit innovators and their institutions.”

“The vision to recognize excellence in patent production and invention led by Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, former Senior Vice President for Research, Innovation and Economic Development at the University of South Florida and founder of the National Academy of Inventors, has directly impacted the ability of the State University System of Florida to remain a leader in patent production today,” said Brian Lamb, chair of the Florida Board of Governors.

“These rankings show our System’s commitment to invention, research and innovation, which leads to increased commercialization for our local communities, our state and the nation,” Lamb said.
