WINDERMERE, Fla. – As Floridians, we take immense pride in the fact that the Sunshine State is the most Veteran-friendly in the nation.

We recently celebrated Veterans Day where we honor the brave men and women who have served our country, it’s essential to reflect not only on their sacrifices but also on the tangible ways we support our 1.3 million Veterans who call Florida home.

Our commitment to Veterans is unwavering and demonstrated through decisive actions. We do not merely talk about supporting our Veterans; we ensure that our gratitude is not confined to words or annual celebrations. It is embedded in the very fabric of our state policy and legislative initiatives.

This year, I had the honor of introducing HB 717, which successfully passed through the 2023 tax package in the Florida House.

This critical piece of legislation ensures that Veterans receive the property tax benefits they are rightfully due. It’s one of the many ways we can offer a tangible thank you for their service and sacrifice.

But our efforts didn’t stop there. We also expanded homestead tax exemption benefits for our heroes who have been totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty, for first responders, and for the surviving spouses of these valiant individuals.

These measures are a testament to our belief that those who have given so much to our nation deserve not only our respect but also our continued support in every aspect of civilian life.

The Framework for Freedom Budget that Gov. Ron DeSantis, himself a Navy Veteran, signed into law this year includes an additional $6 million investment for medical and non-medical equipment upgrades, capital improvements, and increased staffing for our State Veterans’ Nursing Homes.

These homes are not just facilities; they are beacons of respect and care, where our Veterans can receive the quality of life they deserve.

Moreover, the budget sets in motion the planning for the construction of the ninth State Veterans’ Nursing Home. This expansion reflects our state’s growing commitment to ensuring that our aging Veterans can access top-tier health care services in the comfort of a community that honors their service.

Our dedication to Florida’s Veterans encompasses more than just physical care; it’s also about providing opportunities for prosperity and self-sufficiency.

The Framework for Freedom Budget continues a $2 million investment to assist Veterans in securing meaningful, skills-based employment. By providing employers with a skilled talent pipeline, we not only help our Veterans transition into civilian life but also enrich our state’s workforce with their unparalleled leadership and expertise.

Furthermore, this investment is a stepping stone for Veterans who aspire to create and operate small businesses.

By fostering an environment where Veteran-owned businesses can thrive, we contribute to a robust economy that benefits all Floridians. It is our belief that the entrepreneurial spirit of our Veterans is a vital asset to Florida’s economic landscape.

One of my most solemn obligations as a state legislator is ensuring our Veterans receive the highest level of support and recognition.

Central Florida’s rich military heritage and the presence of numerous Veterans’ organizations underscore the need for continued advocacy and action on behalf of those who have worn the uniform.

Our Veterans have defended the principles of liberty and justice that are the cornerstones of our great nation. They have protected our freedoms with unwavering resolve and immense personal sacrifice.

It is our duty and honor to provide them with the support that matches the depth of their service.

In Florida, Veterans Day is not just once a year; it is an going commitment to the men and women who serve our nation. It is reflected in our state’s actions and legislation, ensuring that Florida remains the most Veteran-friendly state in the nation, not just in name, but in deeds.

To all our Veterans, we say thank you. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering dedication to our country. Florida stands with you, today and always.

Rep. Carolina Amesty, R-Windermere, represents District 45 in the Florida House of Represenatatives.
