Conservative Journalist Brendon Leslie Pursues Legal Action Against New York Times Over False January 6th Depiction
Monday, Florida Conservative Journalist and Florida’s Conservative Voice Editor in Chief Brendon Leslie announced plans to sue the New York Times.
Leslie said that Ron Coleman, a high-profile 1st Amendment lawyer, would be taking up the case against the Times.
Last Thursday, Leslie tweeted a video of the Times titled “How Trump Supporters Took the U.S. Capitol” that used footage from Leslie. It was included as part of a piece to argue how the January 6th Capitol events were an “insurrection.”
Leslie was at the event in a professional capacity as a journalist to film the events that took place.
An insurrection is defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary as “an act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an establishment government.”
Conservatives argue that the now-January 6th riots were merely peaceful protests encouraged by President Donald Trump until violent actors pushed law enforcement barriers, causing unknowing crowds to follow the herd inside, largely waved in by Capitol police.
One protestor was directly killed. No Capitol police were directly killed. Injuries occurred on both sides.
The Capitol building is a public building and typically, anyone can walk in and observe.
Trump supporters have broadly denounced individual acts of violence and destruction. President Trump has done the same.
