TALLAHASSEE (FLV) – Gov. Ron DeSantis directed executive agencies Thursday to review current contracts and notify vendors of a new Florida law banning governmental agencies from hiring contractors who knowingly transport illegal immigrants into Florida.

Governor DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1808 last Friday.

“Floridians’ tax dollars should not go to corporations that facilitate the international human smuggling operation encouraged by the Biden administration,” DeSantis said. “I was proud to sign Senate Bill 1808 to protect our state from the effects of Biden’s Border Crisis.”

Executive agencies will begin notifying contractors transporting illegal immigrants into Florida that their contracts will not be renewed unless they comply with Florida law.

“Floridians will not fund Joe Biden’s border crisis. Thank you Governor Ron DeSantis for signing SB1808. Florida will not do business with anyone who smuggles illegal aliens into our state,” Senate President Wilton Simpson said.

It prohibits governmental agencies, including state agencies, counties, municipalities and other governmental authorities from executing, amending, or renewing contracts with a person, firm or corporation that transports illegal immigrants knowingly into Florida. Exceptions include if the goal is to help with the detention, removal, or departure of the person from Florida or the United States.

DeSantis Demands Investigation into Human Smuggling at the Southern Border Under Biden Administration

On Friday, Governor DeSantis filed a petition with the Florida Supreme Court requesting a statewide grand jury to investigate human smuggling networks bringing people across the southern border under President Joe Biden.

“People coming illegally, a lot of them are trying to get here in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said. “This is something that absolutely affects us. The drugs that are coming in affect us.”

The Governor also announced a new strike force in Northwest Florida to combat illegal drug smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal firearm smuggling.
