TALLAHASSEE (FCV) – According to a new report released by the Florida Hospital Association (FHA), the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is resulting in significantly less hospitalizations.

According to the report, at the peak of the Delta variant, Florida faced 17,121 hospitalizations. In contrast, Florida faces 2,075 hospitalizations despite the most cases being reported since the start of the pandemic, even eclipsing Delta.

In effect, today, Florida has seen an 87.88% decrease in hospitalizations from the Delta peak.

Inpatient bed availability and intensive care unit bed availability are also significantly higher than during the Delta peak.

“We are optimistic that Omicron will result in less severe illness,” the FHA said.

While cases are surging, experts have agreed that hospitalizations and deaths are far more important statistics when examining the ‘severity’ of the COVID-19 pandemic than cases.
