TALLAHASSEE (FCV) – Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has signed bill CS/SB 1006 which names strawberry shortcake, with natural Florida dairy topping, as Florida’s state dessert.

Plant City, Florida is extremely well known for their strawberry crop with over 10,000 acres of strawberries.

DeSantis (R) assured that Key Lime pie would still be the state pie.

“We have a history with citrus and orange. It’s great, but this is a major, major crop not just in Florida but all over the country in terms of their reach,” DeSantis said.

The new sweet designation will begin on July 1st, 2022.

The signing was a tribute to Florida’s massive $1 billion strawberry industry. Florida produces around 75% of the winter strawberries in the United States.
