TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) – The back and forth between Republican and Democrat lawmakers continued following a proposed bill that would “cancel” the Democrat Party.

Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill, previously filed “The Ultimate Cancel Act,” which would immediately de-certify any political party that previously advocated for slavery in their party platform, including the Democrat Party.

In response, Sen. Geraldine Thompson, D-Orlando, said in a press release she plans to file an amendment that would cancel any political party “that has worked to suppress voting, thereby maintaining the last vestiges of slavery.”

She said there has been “continuous attacks on voting rights by the Republican Party” and linked to several news stories in a press release.

Ingoglia said he supports the amendment as “another great reason” to “cancel” the Democrat Party.

“I wholeheartedly agree with Senator Thompson and I look forward to supporting this amendment in committee. As a matter of fact, I may even co-sponsor it,” Ingoglia said.

“Under Democrat leadership, Florida instituted a poll tax in 1885 that would stay in place for over 50 years. The idea of poll taxes and literacy tests is abhorrent, and yet the Democrats have not only endorsed these ideas, they passed these laws and enforced these atrocities for decades. Another great reason the Florida Democrat Party should be canceled,” Ingoglia said.

House democrats previously responded to the bill on Twitter and said, “Ridiculous. Extremist. Out of Touch. Violates 1st Amendment. We hope it gets referenced to the Senate Subcommittee on (trash emoji).”

“Voters did not send us to Tallahassee to engage in sophomoric games. They do, however, want Legislators to protect their constitutional rights including the right to vote. The legislation filed by Senator Ingoglia does the opposite. It is in line with his and others wish to ‘own the libs’ – not protect Floridians’ voices at the polls,” Thompson said.
