WEST PALM BEACH (FLV) – Democrat candidate for Governor Nikki Fried said Wednesday that parents should be able to give their children gender transition treatments and bring them to drag shows.

Fried made the comments at a Palm Beach County Democratic Party gubernatorial forum against her Democratic opponent Charlie Crist.

“In the last two weeks he [Gov. Ron DeSantis] is calling on the fact that we are not going to any longer allow Medicaid to cover health care costs, health care costs for hormone replacement,” Fried said. “We’re talking about girls and boys who sometimes need access but that no longer is going to be an option for those parents.”

Fried made the claim that Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing more to take away a parent’s rights.

The DeSantis administration urged the state board regulating doctors to ban transition treatment for minors. A Florida Medicaid report supported a ban on Medicaid coverage for those treatments.

“The current standards set by numerous professional organizations appear to follow a preferred political ideology instead of the highest level of generally accepted medical science,” Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo said.

“Florida must do more to protect children from politics-based medicine. Otherwise, children and adolescents in our state will continue to face a substantial risk of long-term harm,” Ladapo said.

Fried also attacked Governor DeSantis and Republicans for wanting to limit the access children have to drag shows.

“That’s what’s important right now? Talking about drag shows?” Fried exclaimed. “And taking away a parental choice to take their kid to a drag show? This is insane what is happening here.”

DeSantis said Wednesday his staff will look into ways to prevent kids from being exposed to drag shows after a video surfaced from Dallas, Texas showing a provocative dancer at a child drag show.

DeSantis Looking into Banning Drag Shows for Kids: ‘That is Not Something Children Should be Exposed to’

“You had these very young kids, they must have been like 9 or 10 years old, at a quote drag show where they were putting money in the underwear,” DeSantis said. “That is totally inappropriate. That is not something children should be exposed to and so we may have the ability to deal with that if something like that happens.”
